Why are some people two-faced?

I had a roommate once and to my face she would be nicer, but behind my back she would talk shit about me behind my back to her friends on AIM. I saw the messages on her laptop when she wasn’t around. I never did any wrong or mean to her. All I ever was was nice and friendly to her. I would try to start a conversation and stuff.

She would say: "my roommate is kinda weird, it took her 40 minutes to take a shower", "my roommate doesn’t talk", "the next alarm clock(mines) that is that goes off is going to get thrown out of the window", she even said she wanted to kill me too twice on AIM, I confronted her and she said she didn’t say that(she’s lying).

Best opening scene for book?

Ok, I’m sort of thinking about writing a book. I have a couple ideas floating around, and just want to see where it goes. Anyway, I thought of a couple ways to start it. Which of these two do you think sounds like a better idea for the first few lines?

1) Two strangers meet on a plane during turbulence. One is nervous/anxious and the other offers gum(or something) to help him calm down. After the turbulence is over, one introduces himself to the other. They are both are businessmen. They begin to talk.

2) Alarm clock rings. Teenage/college guy roll over shuts it off. His roommate, already up, makes funny comment. He throws pillow at him, then gets up and gets dressed/ready.

Obviously these aren’t the exact words, just a brief overview of what would happen. Which do you think would be the best opening for a novel?

Thanks!
